more caves

You'll probably need a properly calibrated monitor to see these next ones. They were taken in a larger cave that a lot of the group didn't bother climbing up to see. I wanted to preserve the way the light fell off into black.

Sapa - people

I'm still getting used to taking pictures of people without feeling like I'm being creepy.

Saw this when walking up the stairs.

Baby, with our support van in the background. That's how we transported our bikes in the night and through certain sections of the trip.

Sapa - cont'd

If I wasn't lazy, I would have photoshopped the power line out. I like how the architecture of this area is terraced just as the fields of rice patties are below.

I have no idea what these things are for.

Streets of Sapa

It strikes me now in retrospect how quaint and culturally interesting the street vendors were in Sapa, and how the very same thing in America ends up feeling tired and wasteful.

Here's some long overdue Sapa pics.

Fried rice balls. Very good. Very fresh.

This guy was in the corner surrounded by a cloud of smoke. He's holding a tobacco pipe. Or as they like to call it: "A large piece of bamboo"

Sapa - arrived

Ok so after wandering around a bit more we end up at the Handspan office in Hanoi and are loaded into a bus to go to the train station. Once there we're given tickets for our sleeper train to Lao Chai. Sleeping on a train sounds like a good idea, but in reality, it means no sleep on a train.

We arrived at around 5am in the morning in Lao Chai and were ushered into a waiting van to begin the final leg of the journey to Sapa.
