Leaving soon

So I took so many pictures last trip that it's lasted me until now. Here are some pics of the flight out from Vietnam and back to America. Next week I leave for China and Japan.

Vietnam had a surprisingly nice airport.

I was lucky he had no friends.

I'm still here

I'm still on the show. 2 weeks of 14+ hour days is my excuse for not posting anything. Here's the last run of my trip from one year ago. I'm a lazy bum.

20090331-_DSC4933
Camped out here on a main street to have my very last Vietnamese iced coffee.

20090331-_DSC4901
Gotta love that bike.

And the coup de grace, the Mona Lisa. Man on street mistakes wall for urinal.

Almost done

Almost done with my show. I'm behind....

This is where your fine furniture with mother of pearl inlays are made.

Best food in the world can probably be found not in a 3 star michelin restaurant, but a busy street in Asia. That being said, only one of them can potentially send you running for the bathroom.

I'm out!

Feel like crab

Maybe it's because the winter's almost up (crab season), maybe it's because my sister sent me pictures of her eating crab. But I really feel like eating crab or lobster right now.

Here are some lost pics of a meal I had in the back alley market in Saigon.

20090330-_DSC4722
Got there early to watch them setup.

Love the colors here.

Not the best I've ever had, but the experience counts for a lot.

Best thing about rain

Is how clean the air is after, and how shiny everything is when the sun finally peaks back through.

20090330-_DSC4664
I have a soft spot for bicycles as well as scooters.

20090330-_DSC4673
I forgot what this kid was setting up, but I think he was selling something.

It's raining

One more from the river bank.

My faves

Probably some of my favorite captures from my Vietnam trip occurred here. Something about the light quality made everything come out flat and painterly.

20090330-_DSC4642
I like the way the candycane pole is bent. It would have been perfect if that shadow in the left corner weren't there.

20090330-_DSC4643
Love how this turned out almost as a duotone. Would look great printed as a poster I think.

20090330-_DSC4639
I wonder what they're selling.

Food

When I travel, my excursions are usually split up into two categories: Sights, and Food. Here are some pics from a food expedition in Saigon.

20090329-_DSC4629
Light was harsh getting to this place so no pics of the journey here. This place was supposedly known for their pork and rice dishes. It was really good.

20090330-_DSC4630
Walking towards the river.

20090330-_DSC4634
Freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. This was probably the best deal and quality we had the entire trip.

20090330-_DSC4636
Ridiculously cheap and good.

Cat ba island

We arrived when they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of their leader. We didn't really participate in the festivities other than eat fresh crab.

New Year

...Same story. Still on the Vietnam pics.

20090327-_DSC4444
Took a lot of this "island". You'll probably recognize some of the features of the rightmost peak.

20090327-_DSC4442
I'm continually amazed at how well this lens handles shooting into light.

20090327-_DSC4453
There were cool rays of light hitting the water. Someday a camera will be able to capture that. Not mine.

In the water

Made it to the first set of caves. Ha Long has definitely turned into a tourist attraction, with souvenirs being sold and trash floating everywhere in the water, but it still manages to impress me with it's beauty.

Lunch, and on our way

Constant staring by the locals aside, lunch was enjoyable, as was the really strong tea afterwards.

The strongest tea you'll ever have.

Oh, what's this? A scooter? Tag! ;) Snapped this from the van on our way out.

Last Leg

On our last day we made our way back down from elevation. Slowly a lot more greenery emerged and it became more and more humid. We actually passed through what looked like a tropical jungle at one point. Here are some captures.

Color

Most of Vietnam, although beautiful, is green. The rest is brown. So when I have the chance to take a picture of something that is not one of those two colours they seem a lot more special than they'd normally be.

pano_viet-010
This image has all the colors of Vietnam.

pano_viet-008
This was the best Vietnamese sweetened coffee I had. The red tables were we sat were so vibrant against everything else.

pano_viet-009
I loved the colours that the Vietnamese people painted their houses with. It seems like they too became fed up with the brown and green.

The Market

Whenever I visit a new place, I always feel like I learn a lot by visiting whatever local market the city has to offer. If they don't have one, that tells me a lot too.

pano_viet-004
"Honey, could you pick up some baby chickens, and some frogs tonight on the way home?"

pano_viet-006
I was astounded at how deeply vibrant red pigs blood was. It's almost fluorescent!

pano_viet-005
More goodness. I just realized that I'm eating carnitas as I post this image.

pano_viet-003
Tag, photohogger, you're it.
